The IT Sector is an organizational unit within the ITA responsible for: maintaining, planning and ICT development, serving as a basis for everyday functioning of all other ITA organizational units.
The ITA is heavily dependent on ICT since the IT Sector takes part in almost all of the ITA activities related to functioning of the ITA administration.
Some of the most important activities range from daily functioning of Customs and VAT information systems to development of specialized software required by the ITA.

During 2004 the staff of the IT Sector participated in the ITA initial team was tasked with merging of entity customs administrations. This task was successfully completed on 1 January 2005 by establishing the ITA.
During 2005 the IT Sector provided the ICT environment for introduction of VAT. VAT was successfully introduced on 1 January 2006. The IT Sector also planned and implemented necessary reconfigurations of the customs information system for the purpose of VAT introduction. Since 2005, in response to the requests of other ITA Sectors, the IT Sector has developed several specialized software systems being operated in everyday ITA activities.

New developed applications can be divided as follows:

• Applications that enable the auditing and management bodies of the ITA to perform advanced reporting
• Applications for automatization of business processes of the ITA not supported by main subsystems
• Applications for automated data exchange and integration with the entities outside the ITA

The information system of the ITA is used by 3500 users at 80 locations throughout BiH on a daily basis. It enables the average daily input of 2100 customs declarations representing transfer of goods with the value of BAM 4, 3 million. Over 40,000 VAT returns are processed on a monthly basis.

The information system of ITA consists of:

• Customs subsystem
• VAT subsystem
• ITA Single Account subsystem

The applications and software supporting the subsystems are:

• Monitoring of indirect taxes
• Reporting for external users – Voyager
• Electronic records on export customs declarations discharge
• Management of control messages and requests
• Direct checks of vehicles and documentation in the Interpol Database
• Records on VAT refund to passengers at the BiH borders
• Management of quotas in customs system of BiH
• Records on customs warehouses
• Automatic reconciliations of customs duties

The applications were developed and implemented by the IT Sector. Their estimated market value would be over BAM 1 million.
The IT Sector consists of three units in the Headquarters and IT groups in Regional Centers. The proven experience and skills of the IT Sector staff contributed not only to the achieved savings but also to reducing the average waiting time of working delays at customs offices due to IT needs to less than an hour per year. Thus the system is active 24 hours per day, 365 days per year making it 99, 95% of total working period.
